  • New ‘post and boast’ laws and noise camera trial to boost community safety on our streets
  • $2.3 million for CCTV cameras across WA, with a focus on priority locations
  • Retailers to be able to bar violent thugs from shops and shopping centres

A re-elected Cook Labor Government will introduce tough new laws and invest $22.5 million to crack down on hoons and antisocial behaviour in our neighbourhoods and shopping centres.

WA Labor’s Community Safety package includes a new standalone offence to make it illegal to ‘post and boast’ about hooning, violence, property damage and other criminal activity online.

The new offence is designed to reduce offending linked to illegal activity being posted and glorified on social media to gain notoriety and clicks.

New laws will increase penalties for reckless speeding in excess of 45km/h and 90km/h over the speed limit, as well as make it easier for police to target hoons and impound their vehicles.

High-tech hoon noise camera technology will be trialled in high-risk locations, such as Hillarys and Scarborough, to catch hoons in the act and deter antisocial behaviour.

WA Labor will deliver 64 CCTV cameras in priority locations in the Pilbara, Kimberley, Geraldton, Hillarys, Joondalup, Scarborough, Mindarie, South Perth and Butler, in addition to a $1 million state-wide CCTV grant program.

Legislation will also be introduced for retail barring orders, to enable retailers to ban people who exhibit violent or intimidating behaviour from shops and shopping centres.

A re-elected Cook Labor Government will invest $22.5 million in the latest technology and additional resourcing to keep the pressure up on hoons and criminals.

The crackdown builds on WA Labor’s strong track record of tackling crime and the drivers of it.

“Our tough new laws will deal with so-called ‘Crimfluencers’ who glorify offending online, as we continue to respond to the drivers of crime and crack down on dangerous and antisocial behaviour."

“Our Community Safety package will target hoons, idiots and thugs who endanger others on our streets, in our shopping centres and in our communities, introducing tough new penalties."

“We’re backing police with strong and comprehensive laws, and leading the way with the latest technology to reduce response times, to keep Western Australians safe where they live.”
