  • WA-first Residential Battery Scheme to help WA families purchase residential batteries
  • $387 million package to cut power bills, boost jobs and drive WA’s clean energy future
  • WA households to benefit from long-term cost of living relief, saving up to $1500 each year on power bills

Roger Cook and WA Labor will deliver Western Australia's first residential battery scheme, helping WA families to purchase residential batteries and save on their power bills.

The new $387 million scheme will deliver the nation’s most generous battery subsidies, which will slash power bills, create local manufacturing jobs and ensure WA has a cleaner, affordable and reliable electricity network into the future.

Beginning on 1 July 2025, one-off rebates of up to $5,000 for Synergy customers and up to $7,500 for Horizon Power customers will be available, with value to be determined by the size of the battery.

To be eligible, batteries purchased must meet Australian and local grid standards and can include existing recognised brands as well as locally manufactured batteries.

It is anticipated the Residential Battery Scheme will more than double the number of residential batteries currently installed in WA homes.

The scheme will be complemented by a no-interest loan program, with many households expected to be able to access both.

The loan program will be means-tested to help up to 20,000 low and medium-income households cover the upfront costs of purchasing a subsidised residential battery.

Eligible Western Australians will have up to 10 years to repay the no-interest loans of $10,000 or less.

To ensure benefits flow to more WA businesses, a re-elected Cook Labor Government will also fund a $50 million Battery Manufacturing Program of direct grants and low-interest loans.

WA Labor's commitments will build on the Cook Labor Government's household electricity credits that have already delivered significant cost of living relief to every WA household, installation of WA's biggest grid-connected battery energy storage system at Kwinana, and ongoing work towards closing State-owned coal-fired power stations by 2030.

Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:

"Supercharging household batteries will revolutionise our electricity grid, allowing us to ramp up renewable energy, slash power bills and create quality manufacturing jobs for WA’s future.

“As we transition to a clean energy future, household batteries will play a crucial role in supporting more renewable energy in the grid and keeping our power system affordable and reliable.

"These WA-first schemes will help thousands of Western Australian households play their part in WA's clean energy transition – while saving up to $1500 on their power bills year after year.

"The residential batteries resulting from these programs are expected to deliver more than 200 megawatt hours of storage to WA's electricity grid – the equivalent of the first stage of the Kwinana Big Battery.

"Our no-interest loan program will further support uptake of our Residential Battery Scheme, helping people who may not be able to afford the upfront costs to also benefit from the ongoing power bill relief that a home battery provides.

"Only WA Labor will do what's right for WA and deliver a major boost in affordable access to residential batteries."
