A re-elected Cook Labor Government will provide $825,000 to enable planning for up to 2,500 new affordable homes to be built in Albany's north-west.
WA Labor’s commitment will enable the City of Albany to develop a masterplan for a new community in the North McKail area, approximately 6 kilometres from Albany’s city centre.
The North McKail site is 223 hectares of largely unconstrained land that could accommodate up to 2,500 homes and significantly boost housing supply in the Great Southern region.
The masterplan will assess the project’s viability and prepare for development of the site, including assessment of traffic and transport requirements, environmental impact, noise, infrastructure and servicing demands, demographic and housing needs, and stormwater and drainage management.
The City is currently undertaking public consultation for zoning of part of the North McKail site, with WA Labor’s masterplan funding to help ensure that planning and development for a new housing precinct aligns with community expectations and the City’s long-term urban planning goals.
This commitment builds on the Cook Government and WA Labor’s significant investment to boost housing and land supply in Albany, including through ongoing affordable land releases at both Oyster Harbour and Clydesdale Park, and significant investment in new public and community housing, with major projects to be delivered at Hardie Road and as part of the “My Home” project.
Only last month, a further 19 residential lots were released to market at Oyster Harbour. This was the Cook Labor Government’s second residential land release in Albany in 2024, with a total of 55 residential lots released to market last year across Clydesdale Park and Oyster Harbour.
Existing service developments at Clydesdale Park and Oyster Harbour are already set to deliver more than 800 lots in future years to the Albany community, demonstrating that the Cook Labor Government has a plan to deliver more affordable housing in Albany now – and into the future.
