Crossing one of Geraldton’s busiest roads would be made safer and easier thanks to a $700,000 commitment made by WA Labor today.

The investment would see a signalised crossing installed near the intersection of Brand Highway and Columbus Boulevard in Tarcoola Beach helping students, families and residents to cross the busy highway.

The crossing is used daily by students attending nearby primary schools, as well as residents heading to and from Tarcoola Beach.

Signalising the crossing means pedestrians will have a genuine break in the flow of traffic, providing them with a safe window to cross the highway.

Making the crossing safer for pedestrians was raised directly with local member Lara Dalton, who has advocated strongly for improvements on behalf of the community.

The commitment to install a signalised crossing comes as the Cook Labor Government continues its delivery of the $4.9 million Geraldton Cycling Network Expansion program. The program includes a new shared path along Brand Highway in Tarcoola Beach, with construction to commence in the coming months.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Signalising this crossing will make it safer and easier for school students and families to cross Brand Highway."

“Pedestrians will now get a genuine break in the traffic, providing them a safe window to cross the road."

“Lara Dalton has advocated strongly for this project to be delivered, and the Cook Labor Government will continue to prioritise projects that enhance road safety for the Geraldton community.”

Comments attributed to Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:

“Alongside the local school community and residents, I have advocated strongly on this issue, and I am proud WA Labor will make this a priority if re-elected."

“The safety of our community and school students is an absolute priority and this project will make the journey to and from school safer for our kids.”
