A re-elected Cook Labor Government would partner with the Federal Government and the City of Albany to deliver major upgrades and an expansion to the city’s airport.
WA Labor confirmed today it would invest a further $11.5 million towards the project if re-elected, on top of the $2.5 million already allocated by the Cook Government.
The commitment follows the recent announcement the Federal Government will invest $14.7 million in the project through its Growing Regions Program, with the City of Albany to contribute the remaining funds.
The upgrades would improve the runway, taxiway, and apron, allowing larger aircraft to use
the airport, as well as improve access for emergency services such as Royal Flying Doctor
Service and seasonal aerial firefighting.
The upgrades would also see the expansion of the terminal building and car park to support
more passenger movements.
Handling more than 60,000 regular public transport passengers and 1,000 aircraft
movements annually, Albany Airport is a key connection between the Great Southern region
and Perth.
Owned and operated by the City of Albany, the airport supports scheduled flights, chartered FIFO services, private flights, and various general aviation activities. This includes essential services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, flight training, RAAF operations, seasonal aerial firefighting, and airfreight.
