WA Labor will enhance community safety and the wellbeing of at-risk children in the Kimberley by expanding the highly successful Broome Night Space program to Kununurra.

A re-elected Cook Labor Government will invest $5.9m to replicate the Ngurra Buru (Broome Night Space) development in Kununurra to provide a safe place for vulnerable kids.

The Kununurra Night Space will provide meals, a safe physical location and help to connect street present young people with a responsible adult.

Children will be connected with youth mentors and the Night Space will provide outreach services, a night patrol and next-day family follow up.

The facility is planned to operate four nights per week from around 10pm to 5am, with final opening hours and a suitable location to be identified as part of the planning process.

A local committee, including Aboriginal leaders and other community representatives, will develop details of the service, with support from the State Government.

Night Spaces have been successfully delivered recently in Broome and Fitzroy Crossing, providing a safe place for children who may have nowhere else to go as well as meals and access to wraparound services.

More than 400 individual young people have engaged with the Broome and Fitzroy Crossing services since they were established, representing 4,100 individual interactions - providing thousands of meals and helping connect children with responsible adults and support services.
