A re-elected Cook Labor Government will redevelop Como Secondary College, starting with a $30 million commitment to deliver Stage 1 upgrades.

WA Labor’s $30 million commitment will deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities at the school, with works to be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption to the school’s operations.

The scope of Stage 1 upgrades will be developed in close consultation with the school community.

The Cook Labor Government has already invested in the necessary early planning for the redevelopment, with $650,000 allocated for a Project Definition Plan in the 2024-25 State Budget.

Como Secondary College has about 800 students, with a local intake area of Como, Manning, Salter Point, Karawara, Waterford and parts of South Perth, Kensington, Wilson and Bentley.

The school has specialist programs for mathematics, enriched mathematics, IT, hockey, golf and contemporary jazz, as well as a highly regarded international education program.

While it has incredible teachers and staff, Como Secondary College has not had a major redevelopment since it was built in 1969.

WA Labor’s commitment will build on the work already undertaken by the Cook Labor Government to improve facilities at Como Secondary College, including a $1 million upgrade to the cafeteria and outdoor spaces, $600,000 STEM learning space upgrade, and $300,000 in car park improvements.

Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:

“Como Secondary College is a fantastic school, but it hasn’t had a major refurbishment since it was built in the 1960s.

“If re-elected, we will undertake a major redevelopment of Como Secondary College – starting with a $30 million first stage to limit disruption to learning.

“We know this is an important project for families and will work with the school community to deliver the best package of upgrades.

“Only WA Labor has committed the funding needed to deliver a major redevelopment of Como Secondary College and provide its students with a world-class education for many years to come.”

Comments attributed to South Perth MLA Geoff Baker:

“Como Secondary College is a great asset for our community, but it’s time to breathe new life into its ageing facilities.

“I fought hard for this redevelopment and am proud to have secured this major commitment for local families.

“Como Secondary College’s students and staff deserve the best programs and modern infrastructure.

“WA Labor is the only party committed to properly funding Stage 1 upgrades to this school, and if re-elected, I look forward to working closely with the Como Secondary College community to make this transformation a reality.”
