Royal Perth Hospital will get a new, state-of-the-art emergency department, as part of a key Cook Labor Government election commitment to bring the hospital into the future.

Announced today, the $104 million investment includes $97.3 million to redevelop, expand and modernise the emergency department and a further $7 million to create a blueprint for broader works on the wider hospital site in years to come.

The innovative new emergency department will include more than 50 new treatment bays, a new CT scanner space, eight extra ambulance triage bays, more triage rooms and a specialised mental health early treatment zone.

WA Labor’s plan will help to slash wait times for patients, improve conditions for staff and address ambulance ramping, by streamlining services and using cutting-edge triage methods.

Today’s commitment builds on the Cook Labor Government’s record health and mental health investment, with an unprecedented $14.3 billion in additional funding since 2021.

In the same period, more than 800 beds have been added to the system – the equivalent of a new tertiary hospital.

WA has among the highest level of hospital funding per person in the country and a re-elected Cook Labor Government will continue to invest in high-quality healthcare.
