WA Labor commitment to quadruple refuge capacity in Geraldton

A re-elected Cook Labor Government will significantly increase the capacity of Geraldton’s refuges, supporting women to leave perpetrators and breaking the cycle of family and domestic violence (FDV).
  • Cook Labor Government to increase capacity of refuges in Geraldton by up to 12 units, in addition to the existing 4 units
  • $15.4 million commitment to boost vital emergency accommodation for victim-survivors
  • Announcement part of wider $38.6 million family and domestic violence package

A re-elected Cook Labor Government will significantly increase the capacity of Geraldton’s refuges, supporting women to leave perpetrators and breaking the cycle of family and domestic violence (FDV).

The $15.4 million commitment will fund up to 12 extra units in Geraldton to provide emergency accommodation for vulnerable victim-survivors and their children.

An additional $1.6 million will be invested to establish the Safe at Home program in Geraldton – supporting victim-survivors to safely stay in their own homes after a perpetrator has been removed.

Today’s announcement is part of the Cook Labor Government’s significant $38.6 million FDV package, which also includes reforms to the Restraining Orders Act, making our FVRO regime tougher for perpetrators and easier for victim-survivors engaging in the justice process.

The announcement builds on the Cook Labor Government’s proven record of action to end the scourge of FDV, with more than $550 million in additional investment since 2017. During the same period refuge capacity has also been increased by around 30 per cent.

“The Cook Labor Government’s commitment of up to twelve extra units will ensure this work can continue to support women in the Mid West into the future.”
