The decision follows strong advocacy from local member Rebecca Stephens on behalf of the Albany community.

Albany’s long-term water security remains a high priority for the Cook Labor Government, and work will continue to examine other options to secure water supply for the community.

Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:

“Securing additional water supply for Albany is absolutely vital for the long-term sustainability of this community, but that can’t come at the expense of Albany’s unique and pristine environment."

“I want to thank Rebecca Stephens for raising this issue on behalf of her community, and for always being a strong voice for Albany in my WA Labor team."

“We’ll continue to examine options for long-term water supply for Albany, but I can guarantee WA Labor will not build a desalination plant at King George Sound.”

Comments attributed to Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens:

“As the local member, I’ll always do what’s right for Albany."

“I’ve heard the concerns from my local community – and this commitment today means WA Labor will protect King George Sound."

“I’ll continue to work with the local community to find a solution for our long-term water security that meets the needs of our growing region.”
