Roger Cook and WA Labor bolster support for WA’s Jewish community

A re-elected Cook Labor Government will contribute $1.8 million towards establishing a Holocaust Education Centre Museum at the JHub, Jewish Community Centre, in Yokine.

The funding will assist Maccabi WA to undertake this important commemorative project, providing an enhanced facility in the Mount Lawley area for education and reflection on the atrocities of the Holocaust.

The investment will enable an internal fit-out of the current exhibition space to create a museum, including painting, wall art graphics, lighting, flooring, carpentry and art installations.

This will significantly enhance the existing Jewish Community Centre to enable for the continuation and expansion of permanent Holocaust education programs.

For more than 30 years the Holocaust Institute of Western Australia has been operating at the Jewish Community Centre in Yokine.

This $1.8 million election commitment follows $164,000 of commitments towards supporting and enhancing the security and cultural heritage of Perth’s Jewish community including:

  • $150,000 to upgrade the Community Security Group Operations Centre, modernising the Centre's operations with new computers, hardware and integration with the WA Police State Operations Centre.
  • $14,000 towards new equipment at the Jewish Historical & Genealogical Society of Western Australia, which plays a vital role in helping people uncover their Jewish ancestry and preserve the rich history of WA’s Jewish community.

These build on the Cook Labor Government’s continued support for WA’s Jewish community, including $6 million towards the redevelopment and transformation of the Jewish Community Centre into the JHub, which opened in July 2024.
