A re-elected Cook Labor Government will invest $13 million in important community facilities for Fitzroy Crossing, keeping locals safe during natural disasters and boosting sport and recreation infrastructure in the town.
WA Labor will invest $10 million towards a new multipurpose centre for Fitzroy Crossing, which will be equipped for use as an evacuation centre during extreme weather events.
Today’s commitment follows the one-in-100-year Kimberley floods, which devastated the region and forced dozens of locals to shelter at the ageing Fitzroy Crossing Evacuation Centre on Fallon Road.
The new, fit-for-purpose centre will be able to accommodate up to 200 evacuees, with backup power and water supplies, medical and first aid support and commercial kitchen facilities.
In addition, the multipurpose centre will serve as an indoor sport and recreation space and youth and community hub, with the capacity to host private functions.
A further $3 million will go towards a new basketball court at the Fitzroy Night Space, with shade and sports lighting to ensure the centre is able to be used year-round.
The Cook Labor Government recently provided $3.5 million for the Fitzroy and Broome Night Spaces, which have been keeping young people engaged in positive activities since opening in September.
