People struggling with addiction in the Great Southern will soon have specialised support closer to home, with the Cook Labor Government today committing $12.4 million for a new residential rehabilitation and withdrawal centre in the region.

Only a re-elected Cook Labor Government will deliver this crucial health service for the Great Southern, providing intensive, 24/7 support for those battling addiction.

In recent years there has been increased demand for alcohol and other drug (AOD) services in Albany, putting pressure on existing providers.

Today’s commitment of a dedicated adult residential rehabilitation facility will allow patients to access treatment without having to travel to another region.

The announcement builds on the Cook Labor Government’s record investment in health and mental health services, with an unprecedented $14.3 billion in additional funding since 2021.

In the most recent State Budget, WA Labor delivered a $260 million boost to mental health and AOD services, including more than $10 million for non-government organisations delivering AOD community services.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“With structured, 24/7 support, this new residential rehabilitation and withdrawal centre will help people struggling with addiction in the Great Southern to get their lives back on track."

“Only the Cook Labor Government will invest in regional mental health services to ensure locals can get the care they need, closer to home.”

Comments attributed to Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens:

“I’ve been advocating for a residential rehabilitation service in the Great Southern to curb the devastating impact of addiction on local families."

“I know today’s announcement of a specialised treatment centre will be welcomed by many who have been touched by addiction in our community.”
