A re-elected Cook Labor Government will deliver a major $24 million funding to ensure Police and Community Youth Centres across Western Australia can operate into the future.
The funding will enable PCYCs to hire staff and provide services and facilities, as well as access support across a range of areas including marketing and fundraising.
PCYCs currently receive $4.5 million annually in State Government funding. A re-elected Cook Labor Government will increase that to $6 million per year for four years.
The funding boost will also enable PCYCs to continue their safe SPACE program that runs diversionary programs for young people by offering meaningful activities and access to positive role models.
PCYCs have played an important role in the WA community for 85 years, especially in the regions, with 16 centres currently operating from Albany to Broome. They also provide a space for delivery of vital community programs, through venue hire for childcare services and out-of-hours school care programs.
In 2022/23, 52,320 young people attended PCYC’s free diversionary programs, which are designed to keep young people off the streets and on the right path, enhancing community safety.
Comments attributed to Police Minister Paul Papalia:
“PCYCs are a vital part of our community, especially in the regions, which is why WA Labor will deliver this multi-million dollar funding boost to ensure they have a bright future."
“Only WA Labor is serious about community safety and this multi-million dollar boost is further proof that WA Labor will always do what’s right for WA, especially in the regions."
“From Albany to Broome, our PCYCs will continue to have a positive impact on the WA community and change many young lives for the better.”
