A popular South West tourist attraction will receive almost $3 million in upgrades, as part of a new WA Labor commitment to boost visitor numbers in Collie and surrounds.
Announced today, a re-elected Cook Labor Government will spend $2.9 million on kiosk, water and power upgrades at Wellington Dam, home to the world’s biggest dam mural.
The massive artwork has become a must-do attraction for people visiting the Collie region, complementing the new trails network, Lake Kepwari and upgraded national park camping facilities in the area.
This investment will provide upgrades to the Wellington Dam kiosk to improve its offerings to visitors, enabling the facility to deliver more for hikers, mountain-bikers and visitors.
The State Government has invested in excess of $40 million in Collie tourism initiatives since 2017, delivering a more than 73 per cent increase in visitor numbers and millions in economic benefits for the town.
This funding is part of the Cook Labor Government’s wider investment to diversify the Collie economy and create local jobs, as the community transitions away from coal mining.
Comments attributed to Environment Minister Reece Whitby:
“These upgrades to Wellington Dam will help this tourism drawcard to go from strength to strength, bringing in thousands of visitors and supporting the local economy."
“Only the Cook Labor Government is committed to ensuring Collie grows as a tourism destination, investing more than $40 million to support the industry since 2017.”
