A re-elected Cook Labor Government will boost recreational fishing by increasing marron stocks at key fishing spots in the South West.

WA Labor will commit $3 million to improve habitats and breeding conditions at Harvey Dam, Logue Brook Dam and Wellington Dam – three of WA’s key marroning locations.

This will include installing ‘fish hotels’, rubble beds and undertaking re-snagging to improve the habitat, which involves adding tree trunks and other matter to improve the ecosystem and support marron stocks.

WA’s marron season opens today, 8 January, running until 5 February, with thousands of recreational fishers set to try their hand at catching the unique Western Australian delicacy over the coming weeks.

This announcement reaffirms WA Labor’s commitment to supporting recreational fishing while also protecting the environment.

Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Don Punch:

“Recreational fishing is a treasured pastime in our State, and WA Labor is working hard to ensure fishing only gets better for Western Australians into the future."

“It’s not only a great way to get outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, but also an important contributor to our economy."

“This announcement ensures WA Labor continues to support recreational fishers, while also protecting the sustainability of the iconic marron species.”

Comments attributed to Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:

"We're extremely lucky here in the south-west, with WA's unique marron only found in freshwater in this beautiful part of the world."

“The marron season attracts a huge number of fishers each year, who inject money into our local economy and support jobs, so this announcement is a huge win for both our region and recreational fishers.”

Comments attributed to Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns:

"Our region is well known for its fantastic produce, shellfish, wine and natural landscapes among other things, and we want to make the most of these unique experiences like marron fishing and showcase it to the world."

“Marron is an extremely sought-after species and I have no doubt this commitment from WA Labor will be incredibly well-received by our local fishing community and industry.”
