WA Labor has announced it will invest $700,000 to deliver a new signalised crossing on Maritana Street, to support school students walking to and from school each morning and afternoon.
The crossing between Dugan St & Piccadilly St is currently operated by traffic wardens, as well as a set of warning lights.
Formally signalising the crossing means pedestrians will have a genuine break in the flow of traffic, providing them with a safe window to cross the highway.
It also means the wardens controlling the crossing during school hours will be freed up to work at other school crossings around Kalgoorlie.
Making the crossing safer for pedestrians was raised directly with local member Ali Kent, who has advocated strongly for improvements on behalf of the community.
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
“Signalising this crossing will make it safer and easier for school students and families."
“This is area has a high number of students going to and from school each morning and afternoon, so a signalised crossing will make things a lot safer."
“Ali Kent raised this issue with me directly, and thanks to her advocacy, this critical project will be delivered under a re-elected Cook Labor Government.”
Comments attributed to Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:
“The safety of our community and school students is one of my top priorities, and I raised this critical issue with the Transport Minister during one of her recent visits to Kalgoorlie."
“This signalised crossing will deliver real impact and change families and school students, and highlights what can be achieved by a member of parliament who has strong backing from the Government.”
