A re-elected Cook Labor Government will invest more than $30 million in health initiatives for the Mid West, improving the Royal Flying Doctor Service’s emergency response times across the region and supporting better outcomes for locals.

Announced today, WA Labor will invest $7.5 million in operational funding to relocate the RFDS’ Mid West base from Meekatharra to Geraldton.

Once re-located, the base is expected to become the RFDS’ busiest regional base, supporting hundreds of transfers to Geraldton Health Campus each year. The base will operate 24 hours a day and will also include a new primary care hub.

The RFDS will maintain an operational patient transfer facility in Meekatharra, with no reduction in service levels for locals.

In addition, $21 million will be invested in a fit for purpose radiation oncology service next to Geraldton Health Campus, allowing cancer patients to access life-saving treatment without travelling to Perth.

More Geraldton renal patients will be able to receive treatment closer to home, with the Cook Labor Government committing to increase local haemodialysis capacity.

The $2 million commitment will see the Geraldton Renal Dialysis Unit refurbished and expanded from nine to 14 chairs, supporting the service to treat an extra 20 patients each year.
